51 murals for DC statehood found around the city. Quest completed!
The House of Representatives voted 232-180 to pass H.R.51, the first time a bill has been approved by a chamber of Congress to grant DC statehood. It still needs to go through the Senate.
Prior to the vote, Mayor Bowser commissioned a series of 51 murals around the city to celebrate through art the themes of statehood, Black history, and social justice.
Let’s collect them all.
Progress 51 of 51: COMPLETE!
(Updated 7/19/20: The last one was actually at Bryant Street, two helpful, intrepid explorers pointed this out this past weekend. There were two murals instead of one. I missed the other hashtag in the bottom mural.)
Artists (so far)
H Street NE
Atlas Performing Arts Center (H St NE & Linden Ct NE) x 8 murals
Capitol Hill
Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th St NE) x 6 murals
Trinidad
Trinidad Recreation Center (1310 Childress St NE) x 4 murals
Added! (1725 15th St. NE) (Note: This is just off West Virginia Ave. at the Washington DC Public Works guard house.) x 1 mural
Deanwood
Deanwood Recreation Center (1350 49th St NE) x 1 mural
Georgetown
ENO Wine Bar (2810 Pennsylvania Ave NW) x 1 mural
Compass Coffee (1351 Wisconsin Ave NW) x 4 murals
Glover Park
(Observatory Ln NW & Wisconsin Ave NW) x 4 murals
Navy Yard
(809 Virginia Ave SE) x 3 murals
Barry Farm
(2700 S Capitol St SW) x 4 murals
Bloomingdale
(201 Bryant St NW) x 2 murals
Sixteenth Street Heights
(4608 14th St NW) x 5 murals
Shaw
Howard Theatre (620 T St NW) x 8 photos
(Note: Will add individual photos later)
Other theories:
1. That there are five murals at the building at 2700 S Capitol St SW instead of four. Maybe a truck was blocking the missing mural, but I have not seen any photos of a fifth mural.
2. There is a statehood mural near Potomac Ave Metro (SE). Case for: It is a mural related to DC statehood. Case against: It was painted in 2019 and doesn’t have the #muralsDC51 hashtag (even retroactively). The address is not listed among the reported locations. (See photo below)
3. WAMU posted that 1725 West Virginia Ave NE had murals, but none were found there. Update: The actual address is 1725 15th St NE (off of West Virginia Ave.). FOUND!
4. Deanwood Rec Center only had one mural, meaning Ward 7 only has one in total, which is odd compared to the other seven Wards. Update: Went back and confirmed this is still only one mural.
Super cool murals—thanks for sharing!

The 8 photographs along Howard Theatre have been tagged/mentioned as part of this project but I don’t know if that is correct.

Thanks. I went to those too, but I wasn’t sure because they weren’t murals. But I think they might be part of this actually.

Do you think the mural at Bryant Ave NW is actually 2 murals? They are separated, and there are 2 hashtags.

Good call! Thanks. Someone pointed that out yesterday too. I missed the other hashtag. Quest complete then!
