What concerts are you excited about in July?
Every month we give you the top concert picks to consider. Some artists/bands you have heard of, some you likely haven’t, but they are all worth a listen. And we like to include local bands whenever we can. Support local music!
Enjoy July, this will be a good month for live music, especially outdoors.
Top 20 Concerts for July
Near Northeast @ Songbyrd Music House (7/1/22) (Pro Tip: This DC band is giving their fans a final, farewell show after eight years of making music!)
Pale Waves (opening for 5 Seconds of Summer) @ The Anthem (7/5/22) Sold Out (Pro Tip: Indie rockers from Manchester, they are roaring into DC on the strength of their upcoming third album, Unwanted (via Dirty Hit). It comes out on August 12th. Find tickets on resale.)
Nicole Atkins @ The Hamilton Live (7/10/22) (Pro Tip: This New Jersey singer/songwriter is touring for her new album, Memphis Ice (via Single Lock Records.)
Bikini Kill @ The Fillmore Silver Spring (7/11 & 7/12/22)
Steve Von Till @ DC9 (7/12/22) (Pro Tip: The Neurosis front man is touring solo for the first time since he released his fifth album No Wilderness Deep Enough in 2020. It’s a heady mix of ambient, neo-classical, and gothic Americana. Should be a memorable night!)
The Crystal Casino Band w/Color Palette @ Union Stage (7/15/22) (Pro Tip: Local music alert! Check out some of their music.)
Watchhouse w/Michaela Anne @ 9:30 Club (7/17/22) (Pro Tip: Highly recommend both artists if you are a folk/Americana fan. Even if you are not now, you will become one! Check out an earlier review from Watchhouse (when they were known as Mandolin Orange) and a review of Michaela Anne for good measure.)
Fort Reno Concerts @ Fort Reno (starts 7/18/22) (Pro Tip: This year’s concert series, which will have eight concerts, starts in July. Lineup TBD. The great outdoors here we come.)
Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band @ Merriweather Post Pavilion (7/19/22) (Pro Tip: Jimmy also is coming to his usual haunt of Jiffy Lube Live on 8/6, but Merriweather is the place to be! Check out our review when he played in Baltimore. Are you Parrothead enough to name his ‘Big 8’ songs??)
Hannah Georgas @ Songbyrd Music House (7/19/22) (Pro Tip: Hannah is a Canadian indie pop singer-songwriter. She released her sixth album, All That Emotion, in 2020. Her voice is hauntingly ethereal, should be a good show.)
Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen and Julien Baker @ Wolf Trap (7/21/22) (Pro Tip: If you need an excuse to pull together a picnic and sit out on the lawn at Wolf Trap, this is your chance. Three great artists all together for The Wild Hearts Tour. Angel Olsen is on my list of artists to catch live, and I loved Sharon Van Etten’s collaboration with Deep Sea Diver for the song “Impossible Weight”.)
Warpaint @ Capital Turnaround (7/22/22) (Pro Tip: This all female indie rock band from Los Angeles deserves your attention. Earlier this year they released their fifth studio album, Radiate Like This (via Virgin Records), and although I haven’t listened to it yet, I dig their smoothly robust single “Champions”. Take the plunge, get immersed in Warpaint.)
Jawbox @ Black Cat (7/23/22) (Pro Tip: Local DC alt-rock legends are back together and touring again!)
Norah Jones @ Pier Six Pavilion (7/23/22) (Pro Tip: If there was ever a reason to go to Baltimore, checking out Pier Six Pavilion is one. If there were two reasons, then Norah Jones would be that reason. I last saw here for short set during the Silence the Violence Benefit Concert, but it’s been 10 years since I saw a full set.)
Beach House @ The Anthem 7/24/22)
The Black Keys w/Band of Horses @ Merriweather Post Pavilion (7/25/22) (Pro Tip: With the addition of Band of Horses, and the fact that you can’t go wrong with a The Black Keys concert, this is where you need to be on a Tuesday. The Black Keys dropped their 11th studio album Dropout Boogie (via Easy Eye Sound and Nonesuch Records), and as usual it is fire.)
Haunted Summer @ DC9 (7/25/22) (Pro Tip: This dreamy, harmonious LA rock/pop duo sounds amazing. Their second LP, Whole (via LaunchLeft), came out this year. Don’t miss this one, especially if you’re not going to The Black Keys.)
Laura Veirs @ Union Stage (7/27/22) (Pro Tip: An indie folk artist, Laura is from Portland, Oregon, and has also been part of the super collaboration called case/lang/veirs. We caught her live a few years ago at Union Stage.)
Andrew Bird and Iron & Wine @ Wolf Trap (7/28/22) (Pro Tip: Check out our review of Andrew Bird from a previous show.)
Phish @ Merriweather Post Pavilion (7/30 & 7/31/22) (Pro Tip: Go on Sunday 7/31 if you want a shot at a 4-tweezer show!)
Bonus
(20 concerts is just a suggestion, let’s go higher.)
BEX @ DC9 (7/2/22)
Sawyer @ Songbryd Music House (7/10/22) (Pro Tip: A Nashville indie pop duo, should make for a fine Sunday evening.)
Circle Jerks @ Black Cat (7/12/22) Sold Out (Pro Tip: Hardcore punk legends are back in action.)
Broke Royals @ Byrdland Records (Pro Tip: Broke Royals is one of the first to sign with Byrdland Records new label, and they are releasing their new album, Local Support, with a live show at the Byrdland Records store near Union Market.)
Barenaked Ladies @ Wolf Trap (7/17/22) Sold Out (Pro Tip: They also play at Pier Six Pavilion on 7/13.)

The Linda Lindas @ Black Cat (7/20/22) Sold Out
The North Country @ DC9 (7/29/22) (Pro Tip: Local band alert! An experimental indie band, their new album Born at the Right Time (Exquiste Corpse) releases on July 15th.)
