Let’s continue our series exploring some of the incredible beers available in or near DC.
Wake Up In the Future (15.5% ABV) is a wonderful imperial stout by DC Brau. The first whiff is the bourbon barrel-aging infused into the stout. It is powerful. Then when you take a sip, it is so much more mild than expected, ever so slightly bitter and not too sweet. The 2019 edition is aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months, and the bourbon flavor is surprisingly subtle. A pleasant smooth taste courses through you immediately. I could feel all 15.5%, with a mild buzz halfway through. It is not very often that a beer with such a high ABV is such a great beer to drink.
A good stout is one of my favorite types of beers, and I would definitely drink this one again. It’s more of a special occasion stout however, like during your weekly heated online trivia session. Don’t let the $9.99 single can price deter you from trying it at least once.
The can art is also impressive. The grabby, menacing skull with bright eyes sears your soul. The name of the beer may even have a dual meaning. The second, unintended one, could be what we are all hoping for due to this pandemic.

Another great beer I’ve been enjoying from DC Brau is the stronger version of their hazy Joint Resolution IPA (also a go-to beer for me), called Continuing Resolution (7% ABV) (My Untappd Rating: 4.00). I recently picked up a crowler of that bad boy from their brewery pick up location.
