Come out to DC9 on September 1st to witness Andrea von Kampen, a singer-songwriter from Nebraska, as she performs both folk-laced covers and songs from her new 2021 album, That Spell via Fantasy Records.

Andrea’s latest single is a Beach Boys cover, “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder”, and is lushly wistful. She describes the song as:

I’ve always wanted to cover The Beach Boys in a way that pays homage to the brilliance of Brian Wilson’s songwriting and arranging while bringing a fresh perspective. There are so many great covers out there already so I wanted to find something that was a little less familiar. “Don’t Talk” seemed like a great choice for these requirements and my brother and I were excited to reinvent this classic ‘Pet Sounds’ track. We kept the vocal simple to let David’s lush string arrangement and piano part come through while still focusing on the great lyrics and melody.

Another single from That Spell, “Take Back Thy Gift”, reminds me of a little ditty that Band of Horses might drag in for a fresh coat of melodies.

“Water Flowing Downward” may be my favorite song I listened to from the album, the heady strings and Andrea’s voice combine to a melancholy, reflective mood. The inspiration of the song came to her from the Oscar Best Picture movie Parasite, in how water is used as a metaphor.

Don’t miss the show!
