American burgers are the best, but what do the French have to add to the mix?
A lot actually. Le Diplomate’s Burger Americain is consistently among the best burgers I’ve eaten in DC.
The Proper Burger at Duke’s Grocery and the Smash Burger at The Salt Line currently rank up there for me, but it’s hard to say which I give the edge to. I’ll eat them all, anytime I can.
What may put the Burger Americain on the top of the heap is how much it reminds me of one of my favorite fast food burgers, served at the Dick’s Drive-In chain in Seattle. The Burger Americain is similar in style to the Dick’s Deluxe, but fancier and bigger. Even though the ‘special’ sauce reminds one of the other fast food behemoth – le Big Mac – the sauce is tastier in both cases, and the melted cheese between two juicy patties elicits more joy than a plain slice of bread found in the middle of a Big Mac.
Don’t eat the French food at Le Diplomate, at least until you’ve tried their burger!
