Ratboys @ 9:30 Club (3/6/26) (Ratboys have been getting lots buzz for their sixth album as one of their best, Singin’ to an Empty Chair (via New West Records). Pitchfork writes, “Not only do Chicago stalwarts Ratboys continue to fine-tune their approach to the genre with each record, they also sound increasingly inspired… Ratboys may be humble Midwesterners with good intentions, but don’t underestimate how calloused their fists are or their willingness to fight for a lasting earworm.” Vulture says the album is “irresistible guitar-driven rock”. I’ve witnessed them perform live once before and look forward to witnessing the new songs live.)

They are touring for their second album, Online 24/7. It is darker and more personal than their debut, and blends influences from indie pop, 90’s punk, and alternative rock. “Online 24/7 is a record born from confusion, anger, and longing” says Angee, the band’s vocalist and guitarist. “We wanted to capture what happens when our lives are split between the real and the online—how violence, loneliness, and intimacy change shape inside that space.” Also, both openers are from DC.)

It was produced by Grammy Award winning producer Markus Dravs. The band describes the album, “This record is a collection of stories, and the concept of album-as-mythos binds them. ‘The Pyre’ itself is an allegorical place in which these tales originate, a place of violence and destruction but also regeneration, passion and light.” and “This record feels a little darker, more raw and more earthy; it takes place looking out at a sublime landscape rather than seated an opulent table. It also feels metatextual and cheeky in places, like a knowing look reflected back at ourselves.”)

Elizabeth and the Catapult @ Jammin Java (4/13/26)

Bob Moses + Cannons @ The Anthem (4/15/26) (Cannons hit the road for their Afterglow Tour at the end of March with EDM artist Bob Moses. Cannons put out their first new single since 2023, called “All I Need”. Michelle Joy (lead vocalist) on the new song, “The lyrics ‘falling, down again / I’m burning for you’ and ‘all I need is your love’ come from that place of being worn down to nothing, yet still reaching for the one thing that feels grounding and worth surviving for. In the middle of it all, we grew even closer as a band. Our love for each other, and the process of making music we love together, carried us through the darkness into the light, the same journey the song holds.”)

We think that we have managed to do that and deliver a very strong record!” The Cat will rocking on the 17th!)

The Moss w/ Hotel Fiction @ Union Stage (4/22/26) (The opener, Hotel Fiction, is an indie rock band from Georgia, a project started by Jade Ireland and Jessica Thompson during their time together at the University of Georgia. They just released a deluxe version of their second album, Staring at the Sun (from 2024). Jade describes the deluxe version, “You feel proud of the things that you made and how deeply we leaned into our emotions. But then there’s also this sense when we play them over and over on tour or when we’re getting ready to release this body of work again, of feeling almost cyclically stuck in a lot of those emotions because the art does carry a lot of emotional weight. It’s a mix of feeling like, wow, these things still ring true. Is that because they’ve evolved for us or because nothing’s changed?”)

Yumi Zouma @ Black Cat (4/30/26) (I’ve seen this New Zealand dream pop band five times already, so of course I’ll have to see them again. In January they released their fifth album, No Love Lost to Kindness (via Nettwerk). This album goes a little harder, and foregoes the soft, dreamy songs I’ve enjoyed, and puts out a more emotional and heavy sound. Don’t sleep on this band! Check out the last time they came through DC.)
